Our Teachers
Where Are They Now?
Johnny R. Johnston--Mr. Johnston continued to be principal at NHS for several years after the move to the new high school building. He and his wife then moved to Tyler, and he became superintendent for the Chapel Hill Independent School District outside of Tyler. He is now enjoying retirement and having his three kids all living in Tyler.
He remembered Greg Miller and his magic act, Joe Hamrick doing the landscape design for the new NHS campus, Carlos Brown as being an outstanding leader, the Whitton twins as impossible for him to tell apart, the Peppard boys, the Ivy twins, Jan Dobbs as being a great student (he had to say that!), Ella Faye as being a great coach, and many others. He described us as a great class with outstanding potential and many future civic leaders.
By the way, did you know he played on the Jacksonville High School State Championship basketball team in 1956 (the year a lot of us were born)!? They played against Mt. Vernon High School and Dallas Cowboy Don Meredith played for Mt. Vernon!
Tom Cooper--Mr. Cooper taught in Nacogdoches for 2 years and left the same year we all did. He and his wife Sue taught at Whitehouse High School outside Tyler for many years. His wife is no longer teaching, but Mr. Cooper still was until this past year, when he was sidelined by a brain tumor. He has had surgery and is doing really well! And he still looks great!!! He plans to go back to teaching this fall.
He lives on a large spread and raises goats! He remembered Jan Dobbs (of course), Jane Anne Pool, Cal Barton, Stuart Kato (in fact, he still uses a poster drown by Stuart to teach his Trig classes), and several others in our class, as well as the classes of '73 and '75. He said we were more respectful than kids are now.
Jaye Jean Stransky--Ms. Stransky is now Mrs. Stewart and is retired from teaching and living in Nacogdoches. She had many stories to tell about Greg Miller and Ig falling out of their chairs, Charles Parrish, Jimmy Blackburn, John Dunn and his poem Carol's Toes. She enjoyed teaching us all and remembers us as outstanding scholars whom she hardly had to teach!
Her daughter, who lives in California, recently sold a house to Patrick Duffy!
Claudette Brown--Mrs. Brown taught all the freshmen girls of the class of '74 in Girls' Health, and it was her first year to teach! As seniors, she taught many of us Government. She recalled many fun times and talked about Valeta Shepard, Ig Dunn, the Whitton twins, Russell Whitten, Charles Pollock, Stuart Kato, Karen Biggers, Karen Williams, and many more. She hosted a party on our graduation night for Senator Charlie Wilson, who spoke at our commencement. She remembered presenting Senator Wilson with a picture drawn by Stuart.
Mrs. Brown's husband passed away last year, and she is still teaching at Nacogdoches High School and is still the sponsor of the Student Council!
Virginia Alders--Mrs. Alders and her husband are both retired now and enjoying traveling and spending special time with their grandchildren. She is helping with a home school program.
She taught for a few years at the new high school in Nacogdoches, but missed the white building so much that she transferred there and began teaching history at the middle school.
Mrs. Alders remembers us as one of the best classes ever, of course. She remembers teaching guys in Home and Family and how some of them could sew very well! She talked about our FHA trips, and remembered Carlos Brown, June Nelson, Jan Dobbs, Kathy McIntosh, Dan Peppard, Karen Cloudy, Russell Whitten, and many others.
Barbara Reid--Mrs. Reid is still vivacious, friendly, outgoing, interesting to talk to with lots of great stories, etc. We all admired her so much when her husband passed away our senior year and she carried on with such grace and courage.
Mrs. Reid told stories of the chorale winning two sweepstakes our senior year, putting on Camelot, and our whole class being a cohesive, well-behaved group. She remembered Stephen Bedford, Tony Frye, Karen Biggers, Leslie and Kathy Reid (wonder why?), Carol Bunch, Bucky Alexander, Bruce Moore, the Whitton girls, and Ig. She talked about a trip to Florida where the rooms weren't ready and there was a diving exposition in the early morning hours! She remembered a trip to Galveston and, of course, the fundraisers that paid for all these trips.
In 1984, Mrs. Reid went to Germany to teach for a few years. She cried when she went over there and then loved it so much that she cried when she had to come back! She then made the decision to move to Mesquite and teach at the middle school there to be near her daughters and grandchildren. She then met (in Sunday School) and married a wonderful man named Reid also, and they are now enjoying a great life in a house filled with yours, mine, and ours furniture.
She plans to be in Europe the first two weeks in July and is excited about getting to play on some of the historic organs in cathedrals while on her tour. She will be back in time to attend the reunion and can't wait to visit with everyone.
Vernon Cannamore--Mr. Cannamore is still teaching in the Galena Park Independent School District
Jack Hammett--Mr. Hammett is a principal for the Katy Independent School District.
Nelda Hammett--Mrs. Hammett is still married to Jack and she has recently retired from teaching.
Mike Johnston-Coach Johnston is coaching in Katy, Texas. He has had quite a successful career and saw his football team win the State Championship!
